Who We Are?

Environment and Cleaner Production Institute of the TUBITAK Marmara Research Center (MRC) develops knowledge and technology for the benefit of society through national and international research and development activities in line with sustainable development goals, aiming to fulfill needs in the fields of environmental management, technology and cleaner production.

There are five strategic business units (SBUs): Water and Wastewater Management, Marine and Inland Water Management, Air Quality Management, Solid and Hazardous Waste Management, Cleaner Production.

Water and Wastewater Management SBU carries out studies in integrated basin management, groundwater and alternative water resources, integration and modeling of soil pollution with water resources, development and implementation of conventional and advanced treatment technologies, natural treatment methods and in-situ treatment applications, sustainable wastewater management, and domestic and industrial wastewater reuse.

Solid and Hazardous Waste Management SBU carries out studies on solid and hazardous waste characterization, mitigation, recycling, reuse and removal, as well as, environmental risk assessment.

Air Quality SBU carries out researches on flue gas characterization, regional emission inventories, air quality monitoring, dispersion modeling, odor pollution and climate change and noise management.

Marine and Inland Water SBU focuses on marine sciences, limnology, river and reservoir water quality monitoring, coastal and marine zone management, maritime activities management, GIS, geomatics and remote sensing.

The Institute serves as the national focal point for cleaner production. To this end, training and coordination programs are organized for individual and institutional capacity development of those serving industrial sectors, and for stakeholder introduction to current cleaner production technologies, sectoral best available technologies and references. The Institute also coordinates the network of expert institutions and external experts for risk assessment, life cycle assessment, eco-design and energy efficiency.

The Institute owns R/V TUBITAK MARMARA, a 495-gross ton, 41.2m-long, 9.55m-wide modern research vessel. In addition, the Remote Sensing and Geographical Positioning Systems team supports all SBUs.

The Institute performs its researches in laboratories accredited with DAR/DAP as of 2002 and with EN ISO/IEC 17025:2000 General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories as of 2010. The total number of accredited parameters today is 276.

The Institute’s top priority in all its activities is client-focused service and quality. As a result, it obtained the certificates of ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management Systems and ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management Systems in 2001.
